The Ebola Situation

The Ebola virus crisis of 2019 stands as the most severe outbreak ever recorded in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), and the second-largest outbreak of its kind in history. Containing the spread of the disease presents significant challenges, especially as the epidemic is raging in a conflict zone.

The Ministry of Health in the DRC declared the latest outbreak of Ebola virus disease in North Kivu on August 1, 2018. This marks the tenth instance of a deadly virus outbreak in the country in the past 40 years. As of September 2, 2019, the Ministry of Health has reported a total of 3043 cases (2934 confirmed & 109 probable), comprising 2045 deaths, 911 survivors, and patients still undergoing treatment.

The current Ebola outbreak in the DRC was declared a Public Health Emergency of International Concern under International Health Regulations by the Director-General of the World Health Organization on July 17, 2019.

The fight against Ebola

ACE Research joins the fight against the Ebola virus outbreak in DRC

ACE Research has joined the DRC Ministry of Health and The London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine in the fight against the latest Ebola virus disease outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Since June 2019, ABC Research has been working on the Ebola response in close partnership with DRC’s public university and other international collaborators.

ACE Research has deployed a team of Project managers, Clinical Research Associates (CRAs), and regulatory experts to provide technical assistance in vaccine studies to support vaccine research during an outbreak response.

This crucial work aims to ensure the current outbreak is contained and does not spread to urban areas in the DRC or neighboring countries. The integration of vaccine research into the outbreak response for healthcare and front-line workers will enable further evaluation of candidate Ebola vaccines while also contributing to the containment of the epidemic.

The findings from this study will advance Ebola vaccine R&D and add to the arsenals of medical countermeasures to help fight future Ebola outbreaks. The research study will provide evidence of the effectiveness of vaccination in conjunction with other essential public health control measures.
